I recall hearing very positive information about Clara from the start from other top district leaders. From the start, when the opportunity came to replace the current Principal at Jones High School she was recommended to me by all my top-level staff members for the position It was the big Cs-- competent, confident, courageous, and compassionate that made her so dynamic! Most significant contribution at Jones High School, she changed the school’s culture to one of high expectations. As a leader, she demonstrated those big Cs.
Dr. James Schott Retired SuperintendentAs a first year math teacher in an inner city high school under the leadership of Dr. Walters, the chief motivator, I remember her promised that she would not allow first-year teachers to fail. I took that same motivation in the classroom and did not allow any student to fail Dr. Walters is the most remarkable leader. She shared her thoughts with us and was open-minded and willing to listen to our ideas. Together, we changed the culture and climate of our school resulting in positive attitudes, improved attendance, academic performance and increased student enrollment.
Ricki Richmond TeacherAs principal, Dr. Walters was the mother at school and a true blessing to all of us. We had a theme, We’re Pushing a Positive Attitude. That meant Tiger Pride had to be shown on and off campus in our behavior, demeanor, and dress. Our campus was safe and orderly. She made an extra effort to make our school campus look its best at all times, and the students took more pride in our school and helped.
John Henry Former StudentAfter becoming principal of a Title1, inner city elementary school that was classified as low performing, I was struggling with student behavior, motivation, teacher effectiveness and negative attitudes. The organization and operations of the school needed an in-depth study and restructuring where necessary. A nearby principal with a school similar to mine was already using Dr. Clara Walters to assist her with school improvement and recommended her highly to me. I made the decision to make contract with Dr. Walters for her Principal Enhancement Program (PEP) and Teacher Enhancement Program (TEP). It was the best decision I could have made for myself and my school. Dr. Walters helped me develop the attributes and skills to lead my school from an “F” to a “B”. We implemented a schoolwide motivational program that got students and staff excited and energized. Systems were put in place with rules, procedures, routines and roles with proper orientation and training. The culture and climate of the school was changed. Parent and community engagement was increased. With the grade improvement, pride sky rocketed, and the school got much positive attention.
Dr. June Jones PrincipalI had the privilege of being mentored and coached by Dr. Walters early in my administrative career as a dean and assistant principal in an alternative school for exceptional education (ESE) students with behavioral problems. That development helped to sustain my career as a successful principal. Here were African American children and predominantly white teachers who were not connected. Dr. Walters’ introduction made everyone feel like we would be okay. Her speech, demeanor and presence exudes confidence in her leadership. From that day, Dr. Walters became my mentor. When I got my first Principalship in an Alternative School, within the first few days I knew there were significant issues. I needed Dr. Walters. So, I hired her as a consultant. Because of my ESE background and previous experience along with passion for students with emotional and behavioral issues, I knew that it was about setting up a system with structure in place to make it work for children. Dr. Walters helped with restructuring for one year and worked with my AP who needed her gifts. Dr. Walters helped me be direct and powerful but not harmful. She gave me the gift of her time. She cared enough to tell me like it was. She didn't pacify and make things soft and easy. She was direct in love, tough love. She will not let you fail.
Dr. Carol Ann Martin Principal
Dr. Walters is an outstanding leadership trainer, mentor and coach. After bringing her in to my inner city, low performing school to help me and my staff turn it around, we followed her remedy of motivation, inspiration, education, direction and correction to change the school culture and climate resulting in improved attitudes and academic achievement in the school earning an “A” grade in two years.
